BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Spring Owner’s Guide

Here’s what we tell Spring homeowners: if the metal around your BFT opener is failing, the opener itself is usually still fine. The weld gives out first, not the motor. That’s the repair we make most often in this part of town, where humidity and shifting clay soil work against every steel gate in the neighborhood.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT builds swing-gate and slide-gate operators under several series names: Deimos, Phobos, Botticelli, and the commercial Rigel and Sub lines. The welding and fabrication work we do in Spring applies to all of them, because the failure point is rarely the BFT control board or the motor itself. What fails is the steel the BFT unit is mounted to, or the hinge hardware the gate swings on.

If you’re trying to identify what you have, look for the silver BFT badge on the motor housing. The model and serial number are printed on a small plate or sticker on the underside. That number tells us which mounting bracket your unit was designed for, and whether we can use an off-the-shelf bracket or need to cut and weld one to spec. One compatibility gotcha we see regularly: a Deimos BT swing-arm unit often gets installed on a gate that was originally hung for a piston-style opener, and the mounting geometry is off by an inch or two. We can weld a new base plate to correct the throw angle without replacing the operator.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, here’s our position. For electronics, boards, and gearboxes we recommend genuine BFT parts. For brackets, hinge plates, and structural steel, a locally fabricated part milled and welded in Spring is often stronger than the original, because we size it to the actual gate weight and the actual post condition, not a factory average.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags at the latch side. The top hinge weld or the hinge post itself has started to give. Every inch of sag robs the BFT opener of usable travel and shortens the motor’s life.
• The actuator mount plate is cracked or the bolts have loosened repeatedly. If you’ve tightened the same bolts twice, the plate is flexing under load. Tightening again won’t fix a weld that’s fatigued. The plate needs to be cut out and replaced with heavier stock.
• The gate scrapes the driveway on one side only. Here in Spring, clay soil expands and contracts with rain and drought. The post shifts, the gate drags, and the BFT motor pulls harder to compensate. A welded reinforcement gusset and a post reset usually solves it.
• You hear a creak or a pop when the gate changes direction. That’s not the opener. That’s metal moving against metal at a failing weld joint. The pop is the sound of a crack flexing open under reverse torque.
• The BFT opener runs fine but the gate won’t fully close or fully open. If the limit settings are correct and the gate still stops short, the geometry has changed. Most often the hinge side has shifted and the gate is no longer square in the opening.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

If the issue is a squeaky hinge, you can safely spray a lubricant and check whether the gate is visibly sagging when viewed from the latch end. That’s a useful diagnostic. If you see a cracked weld, a sagging gate, or a mounting plate that’s flexing, that’s where a homeowner should stop. Welding on a gate that’s under spring tension or holding a 400 or 600 pound leaf is genuinely dangerous. The steel can shift when a weld is cut, and that weight doesn’t forgive a mistake.

We also see DIY fixes that make the job harder: a well-meaning neighbor welds over a crack without grinding out the fatigued metal, and the part fails again in four months.
