Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication: The Spring Owner’s Guide

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds swing and slide gate operators, and the welding and fabrication work we do falls into two buckets: the operator mounting hardware and the gate frame itself. On the operator side, we fabricate and weld mounting brackets for the AxDP and R Series swing arms, the post-pivot assemblies, and the linear arm brackets that Ghost Controls ships with their kits. The R Series uses a heavier mounting plate than the AxDP line, and we’ve seen plenty of cases in Spring where a homeowner bought the wrong plate online and welded it in place before realizing the bolt pattern didn’t line up. That mistake costs more to undo than the bracket cost in the first place.

On the gate side, we weld the frame pickets, hinge barrels, and drop-rod guides that Ghost Controls gates depend on. The OEM hinge barrels on Ghost Controls kits are powder-coated steel, and in Spring’s climate the coating fails at the weld seam first. When that happens, you get a gate that sags a half-inch and scrapes the driveway on every cycle. We can re-weld the original hinge if the metal is sound, but in about seven out of ten cases we recommend replacing the barrel with a heavier-gauge aftermarket equivalent and welding that in instead. It’s a better match for a gate that swings several hundred times a month.

To identify what you need, look for the Ghost Controls serial sticker on the operator arm or the inside of the control box. If that sticker is gone, measure the bolt spacing on the mounting bracket: the AxDP runs a 4-inch pattern, the R Series runs 4.75 inches. Write that number down before you order anything.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags at the hinge side and drags on the driveway. A hinge barrel or weld has stretched or cracked. The gate still opens, but every cycle is grinding metal against concrete and adding stress to the operator motor.
• The operator arm clunks or shifts when the gate changes direction. The mounting bracket weld has loosened or the plate has developed play at the bolt holes. If it moves more than an eighth of an inch, the arm is fighting the motor on every swing.
• You can see a visible crack line at any weld, with rust staining around it. In Spring, that rust line is the tell. Water gets into a hairline crack, sits against bare steel, and the crack grows from the inside out.
• The gate stops closing square, leaving a wider gap at the top or bottom. The frame has twisted because a weld let go at an intermediate picket or the diagonal brace. The operator keeps working, but the gate geometry is gone.
• A drop rod or catch post plate broke loose from the concrete or the gate edge. The rod still drops, but it’s landing on dirt or missing the catch entirely. That’s a fabricated part, and it usually fails at the weld where the guide tube meets the plate.

Every one of those numbers is a written flat price you get before we touch the gate. The quote accounts for the part, the labor, and the disposal of the failed piece. If we find something else while we’re welding, we stop, show you what we found, and write a new price for the additional work. You approve it before we continue. No surprises at the end. The work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld or the fabricated part fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. DIY or Call Us?

Welding is the one gate repair where I’ll say this plainly: if you do not own a welder and you have not welded at least a few dozen joints, do not learn on a gate that’s holding back a Ghost Controls operator. That operator is pushing hundreds of pounds of force into the weld every time it cycles, and a bad bead can fail without warning and drop the gate on a car, a kid, or you. The risk is not worth the savings.

What you can safely do is document what you see. Take photos of the crack, the rust line, the sag, and the serial sticker if it’s still there. That gives us a head start and keeps the diagnostic time down. But the welding itself, and anything attached to the high-tension points of the gate, belongs with someone who does it daily.
