Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Spring Owner’s Guide
Linear gate operators and their mounting hardware fail in predictable ways, and most of what we see in Spring comes down to metal fatigue where the arm bracket meets the gate frame. We stock Linear-compatible weldments and fabrication parts on our trucks, and we fabricate replacements in our shop when the original bracket is discontinued. Linear’s residential swing and slide operators are durable machines, but their mounting hardware takes every ounce of torque the motor produces. When the bracket fatigues, it’s rarely a subtle event, it shows up as a lean, a shudder, or a gate that binds halfway through travel.

Which Linear Models This Applies To
We fabricate and weld for the full Linear residential lineup still running in Spring: the LRA swing-arm series (LRA-S, LRA-D, and the heavier LRA-HD), the LSO slide-operator line, and the older LDO linear-drive units that show up on apartment gates and HOAs. The carbon-steel mounting ears and pivot plates on the swing-arm series are the most common fabrication job we do. On the LRA-HD, the bracket is thicker from the factory, but the bolt holes still egg-out over time, especially on gates that weigh more than the operator’s rated capacity.
Identifying what you have is straightforward. The operator’s data plate is on the side of the chassis and lists the model, serial, and manufacture date. The bracket itself may have a part number stamped on the back side, but after five or six Houston summers, that stamp is often unreadable. Bring the failed part with you, or photograph it with a tape measure laid across it, and we can match it before dispatch. One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: the LSO slide-operator rack brackets use different hole spacing than the older LDO linear-drive racks, and they are not interchangeable. Buying the wrong one online is a $40 to $90 mistake we see often enough that we now stock both patterns.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Linear’s factory brackets are fine, properly produced, and priced accordingly. For most Spring residential gates, a shop-fabricated bracket from 1/4-inch A36 steel matches or exceeds the OEM part’s service life because we radius the inside corners and use a full-penetration weld where the factory part is stitch-welded. We’ll always quote both options when they both make sense.
Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate sag at the hinge end and a visible crack at the top bracket bolt hole. The motor’s torque is concentrated at the thinnest cross-section of the plate. Once the crack starts, it runs toward the edge within weeks, and the gate drops enough to drag on the driveway.
- A shudder or “chatter” when the opener starts and stops. Loose or egged-out bolt holes let the bracket rock under load. The movement hammers itself wider every cycle until the plate tears out entirely.
- The opener motor runs but the gate barely moves or stalls mid-travel. A cracked pivot plate or bent arm changes the effective stroke geometry, so the motor is pushing against its own mount instead of swinging the gate.
- Rust staining running down from the bracket’s bolt holes. In Spring’s humidity, trapped moisture at the bolt interface accelerates corrosion. The rust is not the failure, it is the symptom that the protective coating failed and the steel underneath is losing section thickness.
- You can see daylight between the bracket and the gate frame. Once the plate separates from the frame, it is no longer transferring force through the weld. Any remaining weld is decorative, and the next full cycle can snap it.
Most of these failures show up on gates installed eight to fifteen years ago. The original weldments were never designed for the moisture cycle Spring puts steel through: high humidity, occasional flood conditions, and temperature swings that work every micro-crack open a little further each season.

DIY or Call Us?

If you want to identify the problem yourself before calling, that is fair. You can safely look for a visible crack, check for play by lifting the gate leaf a half-inch at the hinge end, and photograph the bracket from three angles so you know exactly what the failure looks like. That’s useful information, and it helps us quote accurately over the phone.
What you should not do is weld this yourself unless you are a competent welder with a machine rated for 1/4-inch structural steel. A poorly penetrated weld on a gate bracket can look fine and fail catastrophically, dropping a 300 to 600 pound gate leaf on anything in its path, including a person. We have also seen DIY repairs where the heat from an undersized welder warped the bracket enough to bind the operator’s arm. The motor then destroyed its own gearbox within a month. That is a $400 weld attempt that became a $900 operator replacement.

Original Linear brackets in the Spring area typically last 8 to 14 years before fatigue cracking or corrosion takes them out. Gates that are properly maintained, meaning the hinges are greased and the opener is not fighting a misaligned leaf, push toward the high end of that range. A shop-fabricated replacement bracket from 1/4-inch steel with radiused corners typically outlasts the original by 30 to 50 percent because the stress concentrations are designed out of the part.
It depends on the crack’s length and location. Cracks under two inches that have not propagated into a bolt hole can often be vee’d out, full-penetration welded, and gusseted for reinforcement. Cracks running through a bolt hole or separating the plate from the frame mean the bracket has lost its structural integrity, and we recommend replacement with a shop-fabricated part.
