The key difference: some Mighty Mule control boards accept a dry-contact, normally-open input for a keypad or card reader, while cheaper aftermarket boards need a relay. Get that wrong and the gate opens once, then never closes.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Remote works, keypad doesn’t. This almost always means the keypad wiring has corroded at the terminal or the keypad’s relay has failed. In Spring, condensation inside the keypad housing is a regular killer. We open it, check the terminals, and usually replace the unit inside 30 minutes.
• Gate opens but won’t close on its own. The access device is triggering the “open” circuit but the safety loop or close-timer input has gone dead. A photo-eye misalignment or a shorted edge sensor often fools the board into thinking something is in the path. The access control piece is fine; the safety circuit is lying to it.
• Intercom rings, but you can’t hear the person. Most Spring installations use a two-wire intercom at the gate and a handset in the house. Wire breaks happen where the cable runs underground from the gate to the house, especially after fencing work or heavy rain shifts the ground. We megger the line to tell you if it’s the wire or the intercom itself before spending money on parts.
• Code accepted, gate hums, nothing moves. The access control unit is doing its job. The starting capacitor or the control board’s relay output has failed. We test the relay output with a meter before opening the operator, so you don’t pay for a board you didn’t need.
• Everything died at once after a storm. Lightning in greater Houston takes out low-voltage access wiring regularly. We often find the transformer and the control board both cooked. Surge suppression on the gate’s power supply is worth adding at installation.

The range moves based on whether the original mounting post is sound, whether the existing wire is usable, and whether we’re matching an OEM connector or splicing a new lead. Low-voltage access wiring isn’t high-risk like gate springs, but a wiring mistake at the board can damage the control board, and a new Mighty Mule board cost you just as much as our labor would have.
